Weihnacht German Edition eBook Karl May
I started reading Karl May as a boy in Germany many years ago, and I've come back to his books time and again for "relaxing" reading. It is interesting how his books somehow seemed to mature as I did. Of course, the reality has been that I picked up more and more of the depth of his writings that goes far beyond Cowboy and Indian stories. In many of his later works, which are not as popular as, say, the Winnetou volumes, the plot gives way to imagery and philosophical speculations. Weihnacht stands in between those two phases, in theme, if not chronologically. Act 1, so to speak, begins with an episode in the life of the first-person narrator while still in school (Gymnasium). We encounter hilarious moments as well as some deep pathos as Karl and his friend "Carpio" set out for a lengthy hiking trip over Christmas vacation. Act 2 occurs much later. By that time Karl has become the famous Old Shatterhand, known for his fighting skills. His good friend Winnetou, whose virtues are innumerable, take the stage once again. There are the usual encounters between Native Americans and greedy white people. But there is far more to the plot than we find in most of his "travelogues." As a piece of literature, the narrative holds together. There is a theme that runs through it all, established by a poem, about which I cannot go into any more details lest I insert a spoiler. Don't read this book just for the action, though the action is as good (and as predictable) as most of Karl May's stories. Read it also for its message, which will touch both your heart and your mind.Product details
