Rose McQuinn returns to Edinburgh from the American wild west of 1895. Her baby has died while her husband Danny, working with the Pinkerton’s Detective Agency in Arizona goes missing. She has little time to grieve before she unwittingly takes on a new career by agreeing to investigate the strange behaviour of the husband of her childhood friend Alice. But what appears to be an adulterous affair suggests something much more sinister - the brutal and still unsolved murder of a servant girl. Whatever heartbreak lies in store, Rose must discover the truth. From her home in Solomon’s Tower on Arthur’s Seat, aided by a wild deerhound, her first investigation puts her own life in deadly danger.

The Inspector Daughter A Rose McQuinn Mystery No1 Rose McQuinn series edition by Alanna Knight Literature Fiction eBooks

I never really warmed Rose. The first 30% of the book was constantly referring to the terrible events she'd seen without really saying what those were. I couldn't really have much sympathy for her, because the references were so vague, but I couldn't just ignore them. I can understand references to things that had happened off-screen so to speak, but this became quirky and irritating.

She made a great show of wanting to assert her independence (referring to the Terrible Things she'd seen or experienced in America), but she was actually very conventional.

But putting that aside, I couldn't really understand what this book was. It was barely a mystery - Rose more or less just wandered around. The one thing she found wasn't terribly interesting and she herself didn't really understand what was going on until the suspect laid it out for her. When the larger threat came at her out of the blue, instead of showing independence or any capability, she was rescued by the love interest. Which might make you think it could be a romance, but the love interest wasn't particularly interesting and only came in at the very end.

Doubt if I'll pursue this series.

The Inspector Daughter A Rose McQuinn Mystery No1 Rose McQuinn series edition by Alanna Knight Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Loved that it followed the Detective Faro stories, a fast read, good story line, lots of fun. Read and enjoy.
This is the first Alanna Knight book I have read and I really enjoyed it, I am now keen to read more of her work. The story was interesting, well written and the characters were believable and likable. A great start to what hopes to be a good series of books. If you enjoy a easy mystery read in a historical context I recommend this book.
I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it. Rose McQuinn is a courageous, strong, and feisty women. I was glad that her step-brother and SIL were kind to her as she had a miserable past 3 years. Thought the story was rushed in the beginning as she no sooner landed in Scotland when she meets and old friend and is drawn into the murder mystery. There is a back-story but her friend appeared selfish to me.
You have to like late 19th century settings in Scotland. The lady detective is good, but keeps getting blocked by males. I am not sure I like the free love she feels she is entitled to. Why doesn't she just tell the constable that she can't marry him and let him find a wife because she is waiting for her husband who disappeared in America to come back. I like the mysteries and the animals involved, but not the love triangle and the male-dominated world.
This is a pleasant book that goes quietly along describing parts of Edinburgh, Rose McQuinn's new home, old acquaintances and new friends. A friend asks Rose to investigate the strange actions of her husband. Has he lost interest in her, is there another woman, etc.? Rose devotes more time on that task than taking part in the investigation of a locally murdered servant girl, which has the police stumped. Can the two be connected?

The story's plot may move along slowly but the interest of the reader is always maintained. The one thing that I found irritating was Rose's frequent maudlin ruminations on the loss of her husband and child. It seems as if every other chapter had Rose would giving vent to tears at thoughts of her loss. A later book in the series that I have read, "An Orkney Murder", had much less of that, thankfully. Aside from that, it is a very interesting and enjoyable book.
This tale is not the most intriguing I have ever read, but the author's incorporation of historical facts that lend credence to her involvement with murder and mayhem makes for worthwhile entertainment. Furthermore, if the reader is a history buff, he may find himself intrigued enough to check out a few fascinating propositions the author has presented..For instance, the Sioux Indian battle of Wounded Knee is accurate. but would Queen Victoria really attend a wild west show? I don't know, but I will soon find out.
The author successfully handled the attitudes and conventions of the period without getting into the suffragist movement prominent at that time. I suspect the back story might have been clearer if I had read the author's previous series about the inspector's daughter's father, but the book is definitely "stand alone" in terms of its plot and characterization. The mystery was handled well, with enough clues that the identity of the murder is not a surprise, but although the murderer's identity is obvious a bit before the main character figures it out, there is sufficient mis-direction that the real murder remains one of a couple possibilities through most of the book.
The settings are particularly well established.
