FortySix Years in the Army John M Schofield 9781374863033 Books

The first part is OK - I enjoyed the narrative. Once he got into the Civil War, where he was a General, he spent most of the time rehashing and dissecting a few battles he was in and why one General was good and another should have done something different. After rehashing some of the same material several times, I gave up and did not finish the book. For a real military analyst, it may have real value.

FortySix Years in the Army John M Schofield 9781374863033 Books Reviews

Schofield was a professional soldier who served in the Seminole Indian Wars, The US Mexican War, The Civil War and led the army in the postwar years. It is a fun read, not only does Schofield tell a wonderful story he is not shy about criticizing his fellow officers especially the great generals of the Civil War. Unfortunately, the book was written before 1898 so it does not discuss his role in the Spanish American War. It is a must read for any student of the Civil War but the novice will enjoy it also.
Thanks to my and to the latter of which provided hundreds of otherwise rare and expensive books free (or almost free) for use on the former, I have been able recently to read two extremely interesting books by leading participants in the American 'Civil War' (aka 'The War for Southern Independence,' 'the War of Northern Aggression' or, as I once heard from an elderly lady in Charleston, South Carolina, 'The late unpleasantness'). The books, respectively, are 'Forty-Six Years in the Army' by General John McAllister Schofield (1831 - 1906), and 'Reminiscences of the Civil War' by General John Brown Gordon, C.S.A. (1832 - 1904).

I readily admit that I am a Confederate supporter and sympathiser. Indeed, as a born and bred Englishman, I can see to this day the similarity of many Southerners to old-fashioned English people and many Southern traditions that are English traditions. I always feel at home in the South and I feel so much sympathy for Southerners who had to endure so much from the Northern-imposed war on their States and their territory. It was a wicked war and dear old Dixie took a hundred years or more to recover from the death and destruction wrought by Lincoln's Northern armies.

By some extraordinary miracle, both Schofield and Gordon survived innumerable battles and skirmishes and both wrote in later years their respective stories of the war and some of the aftermath. Both were distinguished politicians in their later years and both had a politician's turn of phrase that they employed to tell their stories. Here the similarity ends for me, for I found the generals' stories very different from one another.

Schofield comes over as an aggressive Yankee set on destruction in the South. He also comes over as a complainer. He complains about almost all of his army comrades. He seems to me to be a nasty piece of work.

However, I recommend his book as I enjoyed it in a perverse sense. It confirmed my prejudices.

Gordon's book, on the other hand, appears as a gentlemanly and generous account of a fine man's exploits in and with a fine army. General Gordon does lambaste fellow Confederate General Jubal Anderson Early (1816 - 1894) for 'letting the side down' (i.e. not winning) in the battle of Cedar Creek (October 19th, 1864) in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and I believe that Gordon was right Early and Gordon and their fellow Confederates could and should have licked the wicked Yankee General Philip Henry Sheridan (1831 - 1888). They (Early and Gordon) could have turned the whole war to the South's advantage. It was Sheridan who actually ordered total destruction in the Shenandoah Valley and his troops destroyed crops and livestock, seized stores and equipment, and burned what they couldn't take away. Sheridan said, "If a crow wants to fly down the Shenandoah, he must carry his provisions with him."

I enjoyed this book, too, as much for its elegant style and writing and its generous tone.

Get them both, dear readers, and then read both on your and compare them. You make come to the same opinions as I have which have led me to award both books five stars.
I give it 4 stars.
Not a bad book does tend to be a little repetitive in some parts .But gives a fairly good picture of the times .
Interesting historical perspective of civil war political aspects of the U.S. Army. A must read for those that study the civil war.
Enjoyed it
